I love how in movies we often see the police, private detectives, and time meddlers go back to the basics using string to depict leads, relationships, and significant timelines. They get so enthusiastic and work up such a frenzy tacking one string end to a photo and stretching the other end to a newspaper clipping that they don’t realise they may have overcomplicated things a bit. One string leads to another and before they know it, they’ve spent an entire night creating a giant LSD-laced spider’s masterpiece that’s useless in catching flies or clues, for that matter.
What the movies don’t show you is them finally sighing and taking out the scissors to make a dejected pile of broken strings. But rising from that pile like a woolly phoenix is sudden clarity because simplicity is remembered.
